Since the developer of this add-on said he is no longer able to support it, I propose that we mention some functional alternatives.

One alternative that I've found is "Save File to": https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/save-file-to/
It doesn't support any sort of rules, but it does allow for a hotlist of common save locations.

There's also "DownThemAll!": https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/downthemall/
It supports file name patterns and selectable save locations, but it does a lot of other stuff, too. Some people may consider this a benefit, but I'd rather use the basic Firefox download manager instead of this wholesale replacement. In other words, it does too much for my taste.

Anyone else know of a suitable alternative?

As I still edit some filenames (pictures) as I save them, I haven't seen any add-on that does it like Automatic Save Folder can. Besides from the filters, I very much like its "Memorize on a site-by-site basis" feature, which I haven't seen on other addons.

DownThemAll, I dropped for the same reason you have.

SaveFileTo looks promising, but it kinda doesn't suit my current needs. Also I tried installing it, but it stays on the "Restart Firefox to install this" state even after a restart, for some reason.

I haven't seen any competitive alternative to ASF, unfortunately.

Sorry for lack of support.
I updated the addon to b129
it should be compatible with Firefox 48 (tested today with the developer build)

It is now 2017 and Firefox version 54:
Still no multiprocess. This is my only addon that doesn't allow it. Can you maybe make a upgrade to enable this?

Seems to break with FF 55+ :( Been using it happily for years now; just a compatibility upgrade works for me.
